This morning, I had a Field Study to Christiania with my Danish class. Now, I highly recommend googling it because I might not be able to explain it appropriately. Christiania is an autonomous neighborhood within the city of Copenhagen. It is regulated by special laws in addition to having some relation to the municipal laws in Copenhagen. However, it is most known for being developed during the hippie movement and being something of a squatters town. I would say that identity definitely holds true today.
When we arrived in Christiania, we had a brief introduction about the area, and then we went on guided tours throughout the neighborhood. Our guides are inhabitants and citizens of the area, aka Christians (no religious affiliation). It was really interesting walking around because on one hand they did maintain some very free ideals as well as a greater sense of community, on the other hand, it also felt a little but run down and shabby looking. They definitely have an extensive recycling system, which leads to a lot of their buildings being made out of reused materials (including a home made entirely of reused windows). Unfortunately, it also makes the area look a little grimy. This was probably a little exacerbated by the fact that it was a rainy and gross weather day too. I think it might be interesting to go back on a nicer day and see it when their may be more people out and about, but at the moment my impression is still a little low. I am glad that I have seen it at least once, and got to learn a little more about it, however odd it may be. After all, it is the number two, tourist attraction in Copenhagen behind Tivoli.
For the rest of the day, I simply made my way home – in various weather conditions including sleet, rain, snow, and some sunshine. I then did a little bit of homework in preparation for the remainder of the week.
