By the time class got out, it was lunchtime, and I headed over to the DIS main building to try to meet up with a couple of my friend who are here from Elon. (I had brought a lunch however I was invited to lunch when I ran into one of my friends, Taylor, walking from the train station to DIS in the morning). Taylor came inside and then we proceeded to try to call our friend Kelli, however she was participating in the scavenger hunt this morning and was lost at the time that we called her, so needless to say she couldn’t meet up with us. Then, Taylor went out to grab something to eat and then brought it back to DIS to eat with me, and I ended up eating my lunch from home after all.
Then this afternoon, at one, I am an academic orientation session for the International Business and Economics program that I am a part of here at DIS. They pretty much just went over some of the basics for the core class and some expectations. During this presentation however we learned where we would be going on our long study tour. Now I thought I had requested at some point to go to Brussels, so I figured I was in that section, but I learned today that I am actually in the section that travels to London. I am not entirely thrilled about this simply because I wanted to go somewhere new, and I have been to London before (thanks to Natalie). Although, I think it will be a great place to end up visiting especially because the businesses that we are going to visit sound very interesting – like Underground (their metro) and Wimbledon. London is also a fun place to be; AND they speak ENGLISH!
After this large information session, we were then broken up into our sections and had about a basic introduction to our specific class with our respective professor. I am also glad that I am in the section that I am because I really like the professor so far, she seems very nice and has a lot of experience in the business world.
Following that I walked back over to the DIS building to read the syllabus that my professor handed out as we walked out the door and to figure out what I was going to do for my afternoon. It was only 3:00 and I wasn’t ready to head home yet, so I called Taylor again to see what he was up to. He wanted to walk around the city a little more this afternoon and take his first photos. We pretty much went back to the sites from the scavenger hunt – since they are the major places to see in Copenhagen. The nice thing about it was that I got to see a couple of the places that my group failed to get to yesterday (as well as several of the same sites).
We did head over to the Rundertarn, which consists of a church and a tall tower. Tycho Brahe once used the tower as an observatory, and you can climb to the top of it to apparently get a beautiful view over the Latin Quarter of Copenhagen. We decided not to go up it today, one – because it was very cold, and two – because it cost money. Although I do want it go up it on a nicer day to get a good view overlooking part of the city. But we did go into the church part of the building. It is interesting because one normally thinks of the beauty of these rather ornate and what are usually Catholic churches and cathedrals. However the church I visited yesterday and this one here today still held this amazing beauty in the simplicity of it all. It coolest part of this church to me was this magnificent organ that was housed in the back of the church on the second floor. (It is shown above so you can judge it for yourself.) After that, we went over to the King’s Garden and walked over past Rosenborg Slot, a castle that was built in the1600s as a summer home for Christian IV. Once again we didn’t enter this site either, but it is a place I wish to see inside because it is supposed to be rather ornate and it houses the crown jewels for the queen.
Then we made our way back over the Marble church that I visited yesterday (however I did learn today that the whole thing is made of Norwegian marble, I think, and it took quite a long time to complete the entirety of the church. It was eventually completed by a financier) and then we walked back through the Royal Palace and headed down to walk along by the river. It was neat because the new opera house, which sits across the harbor from the Palace was all light up because it was starting to get dark outside.
We then made our way walking along the harbor, went back down Nyhavn – the street by the water with all the colorful buildings, restaurants, and bars (PS – Mom I think we should go to a restaurant there when you come to visit.) It was getting late and me and Taylor both had a long ride home to our host families, so we headed back to the train station. We both actually ride the same train, however we I grab the bus as the end of the line, he goes and gets on another local train (so he is actually farther than I am, yikes.)
Once I got home, I simply went to organizing and mentally processing everything that happened today as well as figured out what I had to read for tomorrow since it is my first day of classes! I then did some of my homework, ate dinner once the entirety of my host family got home, finished homework, wrote some emails, took a shower, and now I am finishing writing my blog for the day and will shortly be off to bed since I actually have to be a little earlier tomorrow. Class starts at 8:30, and with an hour commute, that is kind of rough, oh well. Until tomorrow.
